Guide 01
Budgeting Basics
  • 1
    Set Guidelines
Decide how much goes to each expense. If you spend more in one area, reduce another.
  • 2
    Add Up All Income
Include salary, interest, pension, side income โ€” every dollar counts.
  • 3
    Estimate Expenses
Separate fixed (rent, loan payments) from flexible (groceries, entertainment).
  • 4
    Find the Difference
Income minus expenses = disposable income. Negative number? Cut expenses.
  • 5
    Track, Trim & Target
Review actual vs. planned spending monthly. Redirect savings to your emergency fund.

  • Pay on time, every time. Payment history is the #1 factor in your score. Even one missed payment can cause lasting damage.
  • Keep balances below 30%. Donโ€™t let cards hit their limits. Credit utilization is the second biggest factor.
  • Check your free report annually. Request yours at AnnualCreditReport.com. Dispute errors in writing within 30 days.
  • Bad marks fade in 7 years. Late payments, foreclosures, repossessions stay for 7 years; bankruptcy for up to 10.
  • Your score affects more than loans. Landlords, insurers, and even some employers may review your credit report.

  • Compare APR โ€” fixed vs. variable rate matters when rates move.

  • Review the grace period โ€” the window before interest starts accruing.
  • Evaluate rewards (cash back, miles) relative to annual fee cost.

Guide 04
Identity Theft Protection
  • 1
    Practice Safe Internet Use
Shop only on โ€œhttpsโ€ pages. Never email credit card or Social Security numbers. Keep anti-virus software current.
  • 2
    Shred Financial Records
Destroy old credit card statements, ATM receipts, and any document with account numbers before discarding.
  • 3
    Guard Your Social Security Number
Never carry your SSN card. Memorize it. Your SSN is the master key to your financial identity.
  • 4
    Check Your Credit Report
Review all three bureaus annually at AnnualCreditReport.com. Catch fraud before it compounds.
  • 5
    Beware Impersonation Scams
Never share info with callers claiming to be your bank or a government agency. Hang up and call the official number.
โš  If Youโ€™re Victimized โ€” Act Immediately
Contact all three credit bureaus: Equifax, Experian, TransUnion. Request a fraud alert (free, wonโ€™t hurt your score).
File a police report and send a certified copy to each bureau.
Report to the FTC: IdentityTheft.gov or call 1-877-438-4338.
Request replacement cards with new account numbers from each issuer.
